Intelligent cruise control has become a fairly common thread in the auto industry these days with advanced systems being able to adapt to changing traffic speeds. Hyundai has taken the technology one step further with the world's first Machine Learning based Smart Cruise Control (SCC-ML).

The Smart Cruise Control available in current Hyundai models uses front camera and radar sensors to monitor forward traffic and slow down and speed up without causing a collision. This system is how most advanced cruise controls work. What Hyundai discovered was that the Smart Cruise Control didn't adjust to fluctuating traffic as a driver personally would, with actions like stopping too abruptly or keeping too much of a distance to forward traffic. Consumers tended to use the system less as its unfamiliar driving methods seemed less reliable to their own instincts. 

Hyundai wanted to create a cruise control that was semi-autonomous, a next step on the road toward fully autonomous driving. Hyundai Motor Group developed the industry-first Machine Learning Smart Cruise Control to create a ride unique to the driver.

Using an advanced machine learning algorithm and AI technology, the SCC-ML system analyzes over 10 thousand patterns in the driver's habits and details to build a cruise control that acts like the driver. People tend to speed up on the road differently depending on high-speed, mid-speed and low-speed conditions. The system recognizes these preferences and engages the same behavior as the driver.

SCC-ML takes into account three things, the distance from forward vehicles, acceleration in different environments, and responsiveness. If you prefer to keep a shorter distance from the forward vehicle in slow city driving and a wider gap in high-speed freeway driving, the system will learn and produce the same personalized driving habits when Smart Cruise Control is active. It even has specialized programming to avoid bad driving habits so you can stay safe while enjoying the convenience of cruise control that feels like your own driving.
